Rendering Algorithm for Streamlines Style Painting

  • Streamline style oil paintings are the representative oil painting with impressionist effect.Their artistic expression can often convey by the feeling of wide and vivid streamline structure and space-time stagnate through color wash layering.A new automatic algorithm for rendering streamline style paintings is proposed in the paper. In this algorithm, the structure vector field is firstly extracted and then smoothed with the Euler's elastic model to obtain the streamline field, and the texture map with hierarchical color appearance is rendered using bump-mapping,multiple light source rendering and color perturbation techniques. Then line-integral convolution (LIC) method is applied to synthesizing the streamline field and the texture map. Finally the color transfer between the sample image and the synthesis image is used to obtain the rendering image.Experimental results show that our algorithm can be used to automatically create Van Gogh's style oil painting with good appearance of streamlines and color appearance.
