A Mesh Smoothing Algorithm Based on Distance Equalization

  • The 3-dimensional model reconstructed from real world often contains undesirable noise. A new algorithm is presented for generating fair surfaces. For every vertex of the model, we first calculate the distance from this vertex to the average plane of its first order neighborhood. Then move it in the normal direction to equalize these distances. We also use normal-controlled smoothing method to prevent boundary shrinkage. Experiment results illustrate the efficiency of our algorithm.
