MPEG Video Segmentation Based on Global Statistics

For video segmentation based on shots there are two factors affecting the segmentation result, namely the way of computing inter-frame difference and the threshold setting of inter-frame difference. We compute inter-frame difference in MPEG compressed domain, and use the global statistics as the threshold of inter-frame difference. Moreover we tried applying the inter-frame difference gradient as segmentation criterion to make the inter-frame differences within one shot not too large. Experiments of the new approaches are compared with manual segmentation results, showing the MPEG video segmentation interactive system based on global statistics is effective for different types of video.
