Realistic Modeling and Rendering of Trees: a Survey

  • To increase the realism as well as improve user immersion,in many computer graphics applications,e.g.entertainment and virtual reality,it is necessary to model and render trees realistically. However, the complexity and diversity of tree structure make such a task challenging. In this paper,we reviewed recent main work on realistic modeling and rendering of different tree components, such as tree branching structures, leaves and barks.Firstly, the modeling of tree branching structures is divided into four categories, where the contributions of each work are analyzed and discussed thoroughly.Secondly, the work on modeling and rendering leaves and barks with precise geometries is discussed. Finally, the characteristics of each work, their limitations and main applications are summarized, based on which the possible further research directions are also discussed.
